Mr. Derec Stockley is the former Director of Examinations and Assessment
CBAC (Cyd-bwyllgor Addysg Cymru) / WJEC (Welsh Joint Education Committee) for all of Wales. Originally from Nelson, Glamorgan, South Wales, he has long been a staunch defender of the Welsh language and culture. He also speaks fluent Breton and now lives in northern Brittany with his wife and family.
The scope of this book is huge, as Glyn German notes all the major events of Welsh history from prehistoric times to the present day. There is no doubt that it will be of immense use and interest not only to students, but also to all those who wish to acquaint themselves with any aspects of the history of the Welsh nation. Glyn clearly demonstrates that that history is extremely rich. Indeed, not only does the book cover historical and political events, it also delves into the history of Welsh religious life throughout the ages as well as the literary, artistic and technological achievements of the Welsh people.
Glyn deserves our immense gratitude and sincere respect for the diligence and attention to detail which he has shown in the creation of this invaluable volume. It is a book which can be digested at leisure by browsing through the various periods, as well as serving as a tool for those who need to access concise and precise historical information. It is perhaps ironic that the work should be published in the year in which Wales lost its arguably most talented historian, namely Dr John Davies, or John Bwlch-llan as he was affectionately known by most people. I am convinced that John would have been genuinely excited by the contribution of Glyn German.
I am confident that Glyn’s book will be consulted regularly by school pupils of all ages, as well as university staff and students, and, of course, those of us who have a passionate interest in the events of our country’s history. Further, in addition to this expertly produced hard copy, I am convinced that social and other electronic media will ensure that the work is accessed on a worldwide basis.
I commend this work and thank Glyn for the enormous effort required to produce it, as well as Gwasg Y Lolfa for agreeing to publish it.
